Earth tones flatter almost everyone, and they flatter each other. A wardrobe built on them never looks loud, and never looks boring either.

Begin with a quiet base

Cream trousers, an oat knit, a soft white tee. These are the pieces that make everything else possible, and they look as good alone as they do layered.

Add depth, not noise

Bring in olive with a jacket, cinnamon with a skirt, clay with an overshirt. Repeat a colour twice in an outfit — a belt and a knit, say — and the whole look pulls together without matching.

Let texture do the talking

Brushed cotton against ribbed knit, twill beside drape. When the palette is calm, texture becomes the interesting part. It is the easiest way to make a simple outfit feel styled.
